In Command

Our family's command center needed some help!  Yes, this is an old picture, but it shows what I was working with:  a too small dry erase board (that I was updating weekly) and a messy cork board. 

I knew there had to be a better way to help my family (and myself) stay organized.  Firstly, the updating of the calendar every week was not a wise idea.  So, the first thing I did was purchase a monthly calendar dry erase board.  That way, I could write out our entire month's schedule once. 

 It's only been there for a week or two, and Colin and I are already in the habit of looking at it over breakfast to remind ourselves what we've got going on that day and the next several upcoming days.

I reused our old dry erase board, too.  With a coat of white paint on the frame and some fabric adhered to the board itself, I turned it into a cute magnetic surface where we can keep just a few pieces of paper that we might need to give our attention to- party invitations, etc.

I also picked up the much smaller dry erase board to list Colin's chores.  I think all the mom readers will understand the importance of having chores listed in a prominent place and in an easy to read manner.  :)  And, one day while browsing Target's dollar section, I saw the cute little pail that I knew would corral our dry erase markers.

And, the final part of this project- and admittedly my favorite- is the hanging folder thingie.  Taming paper clutter is a major challenge for us, and sometimes you just need a spot to put it until it can be dealt with!  So, the hanging folders are a perfect dropping spot for permissions slips, mail and other random paper items that need a designated spot.  And, of course, stenciling each folder with an initial was a no-brainer.

So, there you have it!  Our family command center is proving to be quite functional, and it is easy to look at, too!

High Hope

Ya'll, do I have an exciting post for you today!  I was so over the moon excited about a project that my sister, Amy, completed recently that I asked her if I could blog about it.  Not only did she say yes, she sent me pictures AND text!!  So, without further ado...

When my sister asked me if she could blog about my latest project, I was excited, but a little hesitant.  What if I couldn't come up with text that was as clever as those I've read in other blogs?  What if the pictures I took made my completed project (or my house in general!) look bad?  But after a few minutes of considering, I decided to go for it!  So here it is.  And keep in mind, I do not have an expensive camera, nor am I a very good photographer -- but thankfully I do have a cute daughter!

I am a wife, homeschooling mother of five, cook, maid, chauffer, (the list goes on...), so I have very little time for any "extra" projects taking time out of my day.  When my husband, Jim, and I lived in each of our first two houses, (before kids, and then as our family was growing), we did a good bit of work, both inside and outside.  Even when we bought this house five years ago, we did some work here and there, but we've had a lull for a while.  After Emily began her blog in the fall, though, I started becoming reinterested (if that's a word) in getting projects done around the house.  And I don't mean fixing broken stuff or replacing leaky faucets or anything like that -- I'm talking fun stuff, like painting and hanging things on the walls. 

Several months ago Emily directed me to Young House Love, a blog which I now follow daily -- somehow I've managed to squeeze that into my already full day!  So recently, when Sherry of YHL had a post called "Hi, Chair," in which she painted an old wooden high chair a bright, cheery yellow, I was forced into action.  You see, I've had an old high chair sitting in my basement for several years.  My father-in-law used it as a baby, and it was given to my husband and me when our daughter Eden was born, over 11 years ago.  

 Fast forward four kids later, and we have another wooden high chair that the current baby (20-month-old Hope) uses, and alas, the old one sat unused in the basement.  Until recently, that is.

The high chair originally had a tray that raised and lowered, but it had broken into two pieces and been screwed back together (quite some time ago, it appeared).  So my first step was to remove the tray and the wooden pieces that attached the tray to the chair itself.  

 After a good wipedown (yes, I'm afraid there was some 4-year-old food still stuck on there -- yuck!), I gave it a quick coat of primer. 

 I took my 7-year-old daughter Leah with me to Home Depot to pick a paint color, and she chose Warm Yellow.  But after using the entire can (4-5 coats), the chair still had spots I wasn't happy with.  Since the closest Home Depot is a 30-minute drive, I went to the local hardware store to get a second can.  Unfortunately, or luckily, as it turns out, they didn't have Warm Yellow, but they did have Sun Yellow.  After seeing and loving Sherry's choice of color, I decided to go ahead and get the Sun Yellow. (Thankfully, I don't think Leah has realized that I changed colors on her!)  So after another 4-5 coats of paint the chair is done!

I learned a few things in the process, too.  First of all, don't spray paint on the deck.  No matter how large the piece of cardboard underneath the object you're painting is, it's not big enough!  My deck now has several different colors of spray-paint-haze on it.  Second, it can be windy even if nothing outside is moving and everything appears completely still.  I don't know how many times I went out there and got set up, only to realize it was too windy to paint!  Third, I probably should've sanded some places lightly between coats.  I wanted a perfectly smooth, glossy feel, and while it does feel that way in some places, it's a little rough in others.  Oh, well -- Hope doesn't seem to mind.  In fact, as you can see, Hope loves it! 

She actually sat in it for the first time today to eat a snack, and it scoots up to the table really well and keeps her nice and high.  

It's so cute and bright that I think it's going to live in the corner of the breakfast room; I'll just scoot it up to the table at mealtimes!

And yes, I do feel like a little bit of a copycat, but that's okay with me!

Squeeeee!  Okay, okay. Since we're all self professed YHL groupies here, let's play the What's Your Favorite Part Game, YHL style.  I love the color choice.  How cheerful and friendly!  I also love that Amy gave new life to a chair used by her children's grandfather!  And with it's new look I am sure it will be used and loved for many more years.

Outdoor dog toy basket

I have had problems corralling the dogs' outdoor toys for a while now, and since we spend a great deal of time outside (all year round, rain or shine) this is an issue.  First, I tried a plastic lidded bin.  It was *mostly* water proof, but when the lid was on, the dogs couldn't get the toys out, and when the lid was off, it would fill with rain water every time we had wet weather.  Then, in some tragic accident the lid got cracked, so the bin became a water collecting nightmare.  So, when I saw this soft plastic tote at Target this afternoon, I knew she might solve all of my problems!

She was just the right size, she has handles, and she is cute to boot!

 The first thing I did was recruit Colin to drill some holes in the bottom for drainage.

To say that I was impressed that he not only drilled plenty of holes, but that he drilled them in an awesome pattern would be an understatement.  See, some of my Type A/OCD tendencies are wearing off on him!  (Hopefully only the good ones.)

Once the holes were drilled, I immediately took the tote outside and filled it up with our dirty, ratty well used toys.

 Since it's raining now, I placed it in the green house.  I think Blake approves!

What a simple, quick and fun solution to a nagging problem!

Kitchen reveal

Whew!  I am happy, relieved, grateful, THRILLED to say that the kitchen is DONE!  (Well, about 90% done as here is still some paint touch ups and trim work that needs to be knocked out.)  But, as far as you are concerned:  IT'S DONE!  So, let's take a look.  As you remember, we took out the top half of the wall separating the kitchen from the dining room.

 That left us with this lovely half wall and ledge.  This one change really opened up the entire area.

 Now, when you are in the kitchen, you are no longer isolated from folks in the dining room.  You can even participate in conversation with folks in the living room (yeah, our house is kinda small).

To top the half wall, I got some stock lumber from HD, cut it to size, router-ed it, stained it and nailed it down.  It was seriously easy and cheap.

As you can see from these shots, I decided to go with the beadboard backsplash.  I painted it in the same color as the breakfast room and installed it using a borrowed brad nailer.  It wasn't difficult, but it did take a bit of time.  That being said, I am thrilled with the results. I plan to add moulding around the top edge, because that's where my cuts are.

The breakfast area just got a face lift.  A green greige paint on the top, and fresh white on the bottom.  I spruced up our shelves with some sunny yellow accents, and sewed some simple curtains.

 Oooh, what's that I see over there on the dresser- a new lamp?!  A new lamp indeed!  :)

Thanks to everyone who followed along with me on this project.  It was fun, but I think I'll stick to smaller things for a while.  I definitely have more than a minor case of DIY burnout.  Haha!

Kitchen curtains: done-zo!

Ya'll it happened!  I found the most deliciously fantastic fabric with which to whip up some basic panels for the kitchen windows.  It took me only a fraction of the time it usually does at the fabric store to decide that this was "the one", and I whisked 3 yards of this yellow and gray perfection home with me and quickly sewed it into some simple window treatments.

It wasn't until I had sewn and hung the curtains that I realized that many of my concerns with the room had been resolved!  Just a small and simple addition in the form of a little bit of a fabric made such a huge difference!  Now there is something lovely for your eyes to go to and rest upon.  Before the curtains, I think the room just felt bland and empty and sterile.  Now it feels like a lived in room!

Tonight I also made my final decision on the backsplash material and made a big purchase.  Anyone want to venture a guess about whether I decided on the modern and sleek glass mosaic tiles or if I chose the classic look of bead board?
